1688 in Transylvania: First, we need address what Sibenbürgen is referring to in the title. It is a German term that means “seven castles,” after the seven Transylvanian Saxons’ cities. Relatively few Transylvanian Saxon descendants still live in Romania. The Habsburg monarchy acquired Transylvania 5 years prior (1683) after the Battle Of Vienna, ruled by Leopold I. In 1688, the Transylvanian Diet is officially renouncing Ottoman suzerainty and accepting Austrian protection.
